Why it exists

Fujifilm built the XF400mmF4.5 for X-mount shooters chasing birds, motorsports, and aircraft — long-range wildlife, sports, and aviation work where a brightish prime and handheld mobility matter more than zoom flexibility. Official materials place it in the XF large-aperture super-telephoto prime range (roughly ~300–762mm FF-equivalent coverage on that prime ladder; with TCs further out). Digital Camera World frames it as sitting between the XF200mm F2 and XF500mm F5.6 — a gap-fill, not a discontinuance. Sources do not say it replaces the XF500 or the XF100-400 zoom. The tradeoff is 400mm at f/4.5 and about 1,245 g with up to 5.5 stops of OIS: you give up zoom flexibility and some absolute reach versus the longer/slower 500 for a brighter, packable prime.

Announcement and specs

Fujifilm announced the FUJINON XF400mmF4.5 R LM OIS WR on 4 September 2026: a 400 mm (≈609 mm full-frame equivalent) f/4.5 X-mount prime aimed at birds, motorsports, and aircraft. The company quotes about 1,245 g, optical image stabilization rated to 5.5 stops (CIPA), linear-motor autofocus, and weather sealing with 20 sealed points, usable down to 14°F / −10°C, plus a fluorine-coated front element.

It sits beside the XF500mmF5.6 in Fujifilm’s super-teleprime lineup. Coverage describes a lighter, shorter, slightly faster package than the 500, with full compatibility with Fujifilm’s 1.4× and 2× teleconverters — 560 mm / 800 mm native, about 853 mm and 1,219 mm equivalent. Optical construction is 21 elements in 14 groups with 4 ED and 2 Super ED elements. Minimum focus is listed at 2.75 m with 0.16× maximum magnification; the diaphragm uses 9 blades. Filter thread is φ95 mm; dimensions are about φ104.5 × 239.5 mm. Aperture range is f/4.5–f/22.
