Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM: the tiny ultra-wide for Canon RF bodies
A pocketable f/2.8 ultra-wide for Canon's full-frame and APS-C RF cameras. Launched at $299.99 in 2021; on October 9, 2026 Amazon sells it for $259.00.
The RF 16mm F2.8 STM is a tiny way to go really wide on a Canon mirrorless camera. Canon announced it on September 14, 2021, alongside the RF 100-400mm, as a compact full-frame prime that weighs 165 g and measures 69.2 × 40.1 mm. On full frame it covers about 108° diagonally, wide enough for interiors, architecture and big landscapes. On an APS-C RF body such as the EOS R50 it frames like about a 26mm lens, a useful wide-normal view for travel and vlogging.
The design is simple: nine elements in seven groups with one aspherical element, a seven-blade circular aperture and a gear-type STM motor for quiet autofocus. It focuses down to 0.13 m for 0.26x magnification, so you can get close for exaggerated wide-angle perspective. The single ring switches between manual focus and a customizable control ring, filters are a small 43 mm, and the mount is metal. There's no optical stabilization or weather sealing, and the EW-65C hood is sold separately. Pair it with the RF 50mm F1.8 STM for a light two-prime kit.
The catch is that the small size depends on software. Photography Life measured -11.71% barrel distortion uncorrected, approaching fisheye levels, and Canon applies a distortion correction in camera that Digital Camera World notes can't be switched off. Photography Life also found that uncorrected corners at f/2.8 go almost black. Corrected JPEGs, video and profile-corrected raw files look fine, and Digital Camera World found sharpness good across most of the frame, with the extreme corners improving from f/5.6. If you shoot raw in software without Canon's profile, look elsewhere; otherwise it's an easy recommendation.
The story
Canon U.S.A. introduced the RF 16mm F2.8 STM and the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM on September 14, 2021, pitching the 16mm at landscape, architecture, travel and vlogging shooters. It was due in October 2021 at $299.99 (Canon U.S.A.).
The-Digital-Picture's review called the distortion severe, noting that Canon forces its correction in camera and in Digital Photo Professional, and Photography Life measured -11.71% barrel distortion before correction.

Verdict
For Canon RF shooters who want an ultra-wide far smaller than an L zoom, this is the easy pick. It's tiny, focuses close, takes small 43 mm filters and works as a 16mm on full frame or a roughly 26mm everyday lens on APS-C.
It leans hard on software: uncorrected files show extreme barrel distortion and very dark corners, and there's no sealing or stabilization. If you shoot JPEG, video or raw with Canon's lens profile, that rarely matters.
Pros
165 g and 69.2 × 40.1 mm
0.13 m close focus (0.26x)
Quiet STM AF; switchable focus/control ring
43 mm filters; metal mount
Cons
About -11.7% barrel distortion before correction (Photography Life)
Distortion correction cannot be turned off (Digital Camera World)
