HIGHLIGHTS

Panasonic filled the missing wide in the S9 pocket kit. The LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 is the same stubby barrel language as the 40mm F2 and the collapsed 18-40 — about 142 g, 40.9 mm long, 62 mm filters — with a usable F2.5, weather sealing, and black or silver finish at a $499.99 MSRP. B&H already lists both colors for preorder at $497.99.

That is the story for travel and street on L-Mount: a true 20mm without kit-zoom weight, sized for the S9 bag and still polite on an S5 II. Day-zero reviews from Amateur Photographer and The Phoblographer are already weighing optical manners and carry; Fred Miranda is still arguing the sibling 40/2 vs 35/1.8 size trade, which is exactly the buyer this lens joins.

Intended use is daily photography, travel, street, landscapes, and video — especially as a portable full-frame pair with the LUMIX S9. It expands Panasonic’s compact full-frame S primes beside the S 40mm F2 and the S 18-40mm F4.5-6.3. The defining tradeoff is pocketable mass and a shared 62 mm filter ecosystem versus giving up a faster aperture (vs the 18/1.8–24/1.8 class) and any lens hood provision.

Companion firmware & apps

Same announce — not a separate day-block. LUMIX S9 firmware 2.1 expands Lens Fn assignments (including Crop Zoom) and adds MP4 (Lite) frame-rate options; parallel firmware for S1RII / S1II / S1IIN / S1IIE; LUMIX Lab 3.1.1 and LUMIX Flow 1.7.0 land the same October 13, 2026 · 1:00am UTC window (Panasonic NA PR). PetaPixel has a dedicated FW explainer if you want depth.

Verdict

Pros

  • Official $499.99 MSRP with live B&H preorder ($497.99) in black and silver
  • ~142 g / 40.9 mm / 62 mm filter class matched to S9 + S 40mm F2 / 18-40 pocket kit

Cons

  • F2.5 trades speed versus the larger 18/1.8–24/1.8 S primes; no lens OIS and no hood mount
  • Day-of dedicated forum threads still sparse — heat is sibling compact-S demand plus day-0 press
