Canon EOS R vs EOS RP
Canon's first two full-frame RF-mount bodies. Both use DIGIC 8, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a vari-angle touchscreen and one UHS-II SD slot, and neither spec sheet lists in-body stabilization. The EOS R adds 30.3MP, a 1/8000 s shutter, faster bursts, a bigger finder, Canon Log and more shots per charge; the RP is about 140 g lighter.

Who should buy which
Buy the EOS R if…
- You want 30.3MP and the bigger, sharper finder: 3.69M dots at about 0.76x.
- You shoot action or low light: about 8 fps (5 with AF tracking), AF down to EV -6 and a 1/8000 s shutter.
- You shoot video: 4K up to 29.97p with Canon Log and 10-bit 4:2:2 over HDMI.
- You want more shots per charge: about 370 vs 250 (CIPA, at 23°C).
Buy the EOS RP if…
- You want the smaller, lighter full-frame RF body: about 440 g vs 580 g body only.
- You shoot mostly stills for travel and everyday use, and 26.2MP and about 5 fps are enough.
- You want the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF family, vari-angle touchscreen and UHS-II SD slot in a simpler body.
Both bodies use DIGIC 8, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a vari-angle touchscreen and one UHS-II SD slot, and neither spec sheet lists in-body stabilization, so pair either with IS lenses. See our full EOS R and EOS RP reviews, or all comparisons.
