Who should buy which
Buy the GM if…
- You shoot mostly stills and don't mind carrying 886 g.
- You want a G Master f/2.8 standard zoom with XA, ED and Super ED glass and a quiet Direct Drive SSM motor.
- You don't need an aperture ring or close-ups beyond 0.24x.
Buy the GM II if…
- You carry the lens all day: 695 g vs 886 g, and 16 mm shorter.
- You shoot close-ups: 0.32x vs 0.24x, focusing to 0.21 m at 24mm.
- You shoot fast action or video: four XD Linear Motors, an aperture ring with click on/off and Breathing Compensation support on compatible bodies.
Both lenses are constant-f/2.8 G Master zooms with 82 mm filters, dust and moisture resistance and no optical stabilization, so the choice is mostly weight, close focus, AF drive and video controls. See our full GM review and GM II guide, or all comparisons.
