HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Canon U.S.A. says the EOS R5 Mark II "offers the fundamental elements in one package for sports/wildlife photographers, journalists/producers, video producers and visual creators", under the line "Master the Moment". Canon lists a "Back-illuminated stacked 45 megapixel full-frame sensor and new processing system for extremely fast reading", Eye Control AF and new subject tracking, and Cinema EOS video features including Canon Log 2 and "Pre-recording up to 5 seconds".

Canon announced the EOS R5 Mark II on July 17, 2024. It launched at $4,299 in 2024, body only, shipping in August 2024. The stacked sensor's fast readout allows 30 fps electronic bursts with pre-continuous shooting of up to 15 frames before the full press, and electronic shutter speeds to 1/32000 s. Around it sit Dual Pixel Intelligent AF with people, animal and vehicle detection, Action Priority and the return of Eye Control AF, plus in-body stabilization rated up to 8.5 stops at the center. Video runs to internal 8K RAW at 60p, 4K at 120p and Canon Log 2 and 3, with a 6-hour clip limit.

Our gallery comes from three photographers: a bald eagle in flight at 700mm, an Atlantic puffin in flight, a fly agaric mushroom at f/1.2, a foggy November morning shot at 1/32000 s, a sunset over the Amazon rainforest and an Amazon evening handheld at 1/20 s. Who should buy it? Wildlife, sports and hybrid shooters who want resolution and speed in one body. Its limits: about 746 g with card and battery, and about 340 viewfinder / 630 LCD shots per charge on the new LP-E6P (CIPA, power-saving mode).
