Who should buy which

Buy the R5 Mark II if…

  • You shoot action: 30 fps electronic bursts with pre-continuous shooting and a 1/32000 s shutter.
  • You want Eye Control AF and Dual Pixel Intelligent AF.
  • You shoot serious video: 8K RAW to 60p, Canon Log 2 and a full-size HDMI port.

Buy the R5 if…

  • You mostly shoot landscape, studio and travel, where 12 fps mechanical is enough.
  • You already own LP-E6NH batteries.
  • You want the 45MP body that launched at the lower price.

Same 45MP resolution class, ISO range, finder and card pairing, so the choice is the Mark II's stacked sensor and its speed, Eye Control AF, 8K60 RAW and full-size HDMI against the original's lower launch price and older battery. Battery figures are Canon's CIPA power-saving-mode numbers on both sides. See our full R5 Mark II and R5 reviews, or all comparisons.
