Canon EOS R6 Mark II: the 24MP full-frame all-rounder the R6 Mark III left behind

Canon's hybrid full-frame workhorse, a generation behind the 32.5MP R6 Mark III but still a fast, stabilized all-rounder. Launched at $2,499 in 2022, body only.

HIGHLIGHTS

The EOS R6 Mark II is Canon's second-generation hybrid full-frame camera, announced on November 2, 2022 at $2,499 body-only. Three years later Canon replaced it at the top of the line with the EOS R6 Mark III (November 2025, $2,799 body-only), which moves to 32.5MP, internal 7K raw video and a CFexpress Type B slot. That leaves the Mark II as the 24MP way into Canon full frame with most of the same speed and autofocus.

Inside is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC X processor. It shoots up to 12 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter, and a raw burst mode records at 30 fps with up to 0.5 s of pre-shooting. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covers the whole frame in its automatic modes, focuses down to EV -6.5 and tracks people, animals (dogs, cats, birds and horses) and vehicles (cars and motorbikes, aircraft and trains). In-body stabilization is rated up to 8 stops with a compatible lens. Video is 4K up to 60p oversampled from 6K across the full width, Full HD up to 180p, Canon Log 3 and 10-bit 4:2:2, plus 6K raw over HDMI to an Atomos Ninja V+. Around that are a 3.69-million-dot OLED viewfinder, a 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen, two UHS-II SD slots, a dust- and water-resistant body and 670 g with battery and card.

There are trade-offs. DPReview measured an 18 ms readout in electronic-shutter mode and wouldn't use the 40 fps mode for close-up motorsports or golf-swing analysis; Cameralabs saw some skewing with fast panning but notes the R6 II has the fastest mechanical shutter in its class. PCMag lists limited third-party lens support and a fragile micro HDMI port, and 24MP is less than newer rivals offer. For people, events, pets, sport and travel at this price, it's still one of the easiest full-frame bodies to recommend.

The story

Canon U.S.A. announced the EOS R6 Mark II on November 2, 2022, alongside the RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM and the Speedlite EL-5. The body was due in late November 2022 at $2,499, with kits at $2,799 (RF24-105 F4-7.1 IS STM) and $3,599 (RF24-105 F4 L IS USM) (Canon U.S.A.).

DPReview's review (91%) called it an excellent all-rounder and singled out its 40 fps bursts. On November 6, 2025 Canon announced the EOS R6 Mark III at $2,799 body-only (Canon U.S.A.).

Verdict

If you want a full-frame Canon body that handles people, pets, events, sport, travel and video without stepping up to the R6 Mark III, the R6 Mark II is the one to look at. Autofocus tracking is excellent, 40 fps bursts and strong stabilization widen what it can do, and both card slots take SD.

It isn't the newest: 24MP gives less room to crop than 32–33MP rivals, the electronic shutter shows some rolling shutter, and third-party RF lenses are limited. Those are fair trade-offs.

Pros

  • 12 fps mechanical, 40 fps electronic; raw burst with pre-shooting
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II tracking for people, animals and vehicles
  • Up to 8 stops of IBIS
  • 4K/60 oversampled from 6K; dual UHS-II SD slots

Cons

  • About 18 ms rolling shutter in e-shutter mode (DPReview)
  • 24MP, less than newer rivals
  • Limited third-party lens support; micro HDMI port (PCMag)
  • No open-gate or internal raw video (R6 Mark III adds both)
