HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Sony Electronics calls the a7C II "the second-generation version of the Alpha7 C, which is celebrated for its combination of performance and features in a compact size, perfect for a wide range of shooting scenarios such as travel and street photography." It carries "the same AI-processing unit and BIONZ XR processors" as the a7R V and a6700, and Sony says that compared with the a7 IV it is "approximately 22% lighter and has approximately 45% less volume".

Sony announced the a7C II on August 29, 2023 at $2,199.99 body-only and $2,499.99 with the FE 28-60mm, for fall 2023. Almost everything inside moved up a generation from the 2020 a7C: a 33MP full-frame sensor in place of 24.2MP, subject recognition for people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes, 5-axis stabilization rated at 7.0 steps, a 0.70x OLED finder, a new front dial and a still/movie/S&Q switch, and 4K oversampled from 7K with 10-bit 4:2:2, S-Log3 and S-Cinetone.

Our gallery comes from six photographers: a hibiscus flower, Sint-Laurenshaven harbor in Rotterdam, a cat at ISO 12800, Morioka with Mount Iwate behind the Kitakami River, an outdoor stairway with blue railings and leaves at Yangmingshan, Taiwan. Who should buy it? Travel and street shooters who want full frame and current Sony AF in a small body. Its limits: one card slot, a 2.36M-dot finder, a 1/4000 s mechanical shutter, 4K/60p only in Super 35 and about 530 viewfinder shots per charge (CIPA).

The story

Sony Electronics announced the a7C II on August 29, 2023 as "the second-generation version of the Alpha7 C", with "approximately 33.0 effective megapixels" and "the same AI-processing unit and BIONZ XR processors found in Sony's newest interchangeable lens cameras such as the Alpha 7R V and Alpha 6700" (Sony Electronics).

Sony listed it for fall 2023 at an MSRP of $2,199.99 for the camera only and $2,499.99 with the 28-60mm lens (Sony Electronics via PR Newswire). The release adds that 4K 60p/50p recording "is only available in Super 35mm mode".

Pros

  • 33MP full-frame sensor; AI subject recognition
  • 5-axis stabilization rated at 7.0 steps
  • Front dial and still/movie/S&Q switch
  • About 514 g with battery and card

Cons

  • One card slot
  • 2.36M-dot finder
  • 4K/60p only in Super 35
  • About 530 viewfinder shots per charge (CIPA)
