Sony’s lightweight GM wildlife pair is no longer a calendar rumor. The FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS are official, with Alpha Universe locking MSRP at $2,699.99 and $3,699.99 (available October 2026).
What changes the bag is the weight. Both primes land at about 2.2 lb — 994 g and 995 g on the B&H sheet — with barrels around 108 × 242 mm and 108 × 263 mm. That is the handholdable tele tier bird and sports shooters have been comparing to Nikon’s compact primes and to living on a 300 GM plus converters. Dual XD linear motors, Optical SteadyShot, a removable rotating collar, and weather sealing are on the same page as the dollars.
These are not the f/2.8 or f/4 flagships. You give up aperture for a package that B&H literally compares to a 70-200 in carry feel. Alpha Universe’s first-shots gallery is open with creator wildlife frames from both primes — the story today is official glass, official model numbers, locked MSRP, and a ship date on the calendar.
Intended use is handheld wildlife, birding, and sports where reach matters more than f/2.8–f/4 speed — a portable GM super-tele tier beside the existing heavy/fast 400/2.8 GM and 600/4 GM, complementary to the zooms, not stated as replacements. The defining tradeoff is mass and length (≈2.2 lb, ~9.5–10.4") versus maximum aperture (f/4.5 and f/6.3).
Facts from opened B&H PDPs and Alpha Universe press for SEL400F45GM / SEL600F63GM. Min-focus and MTF/PF omitted this pass (not in B&H 12-row table).

Official Alpha Universe first shots — wildlife output from the new f/4.5 and f/6.3 GM primes (not sibling 400/2.8 or 600/4 frames). Hands-on on Alpha Universe.
Our September 12 rumor lock pinned the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS to a Sep 15 announce window with rumored weight and dollar bands — no official cutouts. That rumor page is left unchanged as the historical record.
This follow-up is official: Alpha Universe MSRP $2,699.99 / $3,699.99 (October 2026). Weights and sizes confirmed (994 g / 995 g; 108 × 242 mm / 108 × 263 mm). Heroes are SKU-named Alpha Universe cutouts with sibling-lookalike flags versus 400/2.8 and 600/4. Sample gallery is READY (six AU creator frames; Jared’s 400 includes a 1.4× TC).
