Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM + 600mm f/6.3 GM (Rumor): Sep 15 announce lock

(Rumor / unconfirmed.) Sony has not announced these two GM tele primes. SonyAlphaRumors now pins them to September 15 around 3–4pm London. The FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is already official — this page is the teles only.

HIGHLIGHTS

The lightweight Sony wildlife pair that was supposed to land with the fisheye is now pinned to a clock. Multiple SonyAlphaRumors sources put the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS on September 15, 2026 around 3–4pm London, with preorders expected to open the same hour. The fisheye already shipped as an official story on September 8; these two GM teles are the unfinished half of that rumor trio.

The size story has not softened. Both primes are still talked about as sub-kilogram bodies — about 994 g and 995 g, with barrels around 108 × 242 mm and 108 × 263 mm — framed by SAR as lighter than the matching Nikkor Z 400/4.5 and Z 600/6.3. Dollar bands still sit near $2,699–$2,899 and about $3,800, with EU chatter around €3,000 and €4,200. Treat every gram and dollar as rumor until Sony publishes a sheet.

That weight is the whole point for bird and sports shooters. On Fred Miranda, the thread keeps comparing a dedicated 600/6.3 to living on a 300 GM + converters, arguing reach with a 1.4× versus a 2×, and asking whether close focus will beat Nikon’s long-distance habit. Until Sony puts glass on a table, every number stays rumor — but the calendar just got hard.

Rumor desk — the two teles

Rumor framing only. Sony has not published these lenses. SAR’s “Confirmed” headline is a rumor-site trusted-source claim for the date, not Sony press. Sources do not say these replace the faster, heavier FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS or FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS.

Tester soft notes (SAR): look similar to the 300mm GM; no drop-in filter on the 400; 600 rumored at 2.5 m minimum focus. Optics formula, AF system detail, weather sealing, teleconverter support, and Phase Fresnel are not in the leaks — omitted here rather than invented.

Rumored specifications

Every dollar, euro, and gram below is labeled leak/rumor from SonyAlphaRumors and aggregators repeating SAR. Never treat these figures as MSRP.

Sample photos

N/A. These lenses are not announced and not shipping. We are not inventing sample photos or pulling “GM lookalike” wildlife frames as if they are from these primes.

Verdict

Pros

  • If real, sub-1 kg 400/4.5 and 600/6.3 GM primes would fill a portable tier beside the faster GMs
  • The Sep 15 clock lock is the first hard calendar claim since the missed Sep 8 window

Cons

  • Sony is silent; SAR “Confirmed” = trusted-source date claim, not a press release
  • Rumor $ may be aggressive; no optics/AF/weather/TC detail in leaks

Further discussion

Related (already official). The FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is not still unannounced — see SEL814G official. APERTURE NOTES’s Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is an unrelated F5.6-8 zoom, not prior coverage of these GM teles.

What changed from prior coverage

SonyAlphaRumors now locks the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS to September 15 around 3–4pm London, with preorders expected the same hour. Weights stay in the sub-kilogram band (~994 g / ~995 g; 108 × 242 mm / 108 × 263 mm). Dollar bands remain $2,699–$2,899 and about $3,800, with EU chatter around €3,000 / €4,200. All of that is still rumor. Sony has not announced. There is no sample gallery.

Our September 8 trio rumor bundled these two GMs with the 8-14 f/3.5 G against a Sep 8 ~3pm London window. That page is left unchanged as the historical record. The fisheye is already official — see SEL814G — so this page is the teles only.

The new fact is the Sep 15 clock lock plus a refreshed confirmation tone on the same weight and price bands, not a new optical sheet. 8-14 is removed from this story. Still rumor, still samples N/A, still no fake GM cutouts.
