HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Sony Electronics introduced the second-generation G Master 70-200 as the "World's lightest" lens of its class, footnoted "As of the October 2021 product announcement, compared to full-frame F2.8 70-200mm telephoto zoom lenses that support autofocus. Sony survey." Sony says it is about 29% lighter than the previous model, has "up to approximately four times faster" AF, and will "make a perfect telephoto zoom addition to any creator's kit".

Sony announced the lens on October 13, 2021 at $2,800, for December 2021. It is a ground-up redesign: Sony cut the weight to about 1,045 g, moved to internal zooming so the barrel length doesn't change, and drives focus with four XD Linear Motors. The optics use an XA element, two aspherical, two ED and two Super ED elements, and the lens adds an 11-blade aperture, an aperture ring with a click on/off switch, three focus hold buttons, reduced focus breathing, 0.4 m minimum focus at 70mm (0.3x maximum magnification) and support for Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

Our gallery comes from three photographers on three Sony bodies: a great tit in the snow at f/2.8, a red squirrel at ISO 2000, Kleiner Watzmann in cloud, a mallard at the Königssee, a western bluebird at ISO 3200 and a bison resting in a North Rim meadow. Who should buy it? Wedding, event, sports and wildlife shooters on Sony bodies who want the fastest, lightest f/2.8 telephoto zoom in Sony's line. Its limit is the launch price; owners on FredMiranda weigh it against the original GM and Tamron's 35-150mm.
