Why it exists. Sony Electronics says the a7R V "combines Sony's highest resolution image sensor in an Alpha camera with a new AI (artificial intelligence) processing unit dedicated to AI-based image recognition – a first in any Alpha camera", and calls it "ideal for professionals who need a first-class high-resolution imaging tool". Sony's release also lists "the most effective 8-step image stabilization system ever offered in any of Sony's Alpha cameras", "refined 8K movie recording" and "a new 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor".
Sony announced the a7R V on October 26, 2022 at $3,900 body-only, shipping December 2022. It kept the 61MP resolution of the a7R IV and added the AI processing unit, which drives subject recognition for people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes. Around it sit 8-step stabilization (Sony's rating), a 9.44M-dot 0.90x finder, a 3.2-type screen that tilts and swings out, two CFexpress Type A/SD slots and 8K 24/25p video. Sony has since announced the a7R VI (May 2026).
