Who should buy which
Buy the a7R V if…
- You shoot moving subjects: AI subject recognition covers people, animals, birds, insects and vehicles.
- You want the 9.44M-dot finder, the 4-axis screen and stabilization rated at 8 steps.
- You shoot video too: 8K, 4K oversampled from 6.2K and 10-bit 4:2:2.
Buy the a7R IV if…
- You shoot landscapes and studio work, where 61MP matters more than tracking.
- You want more shots per charge: about 670 (screen) / 530 (viewfinder) in Sony's CIPA figures.
- You want the lighter body: about 665 g against 723 g.
Same 61MP sensor size, ISO range and 10 fps top speed, so the choice is AI autofocus, stabilization, the finder, the screen and video against battery life and weight. Battery figures are Sony's CIPA numbers in the same screen and viewfinder modes on both sides. See our full a7R V and a7R IV reviews, or all comparisons.
