HIGHLIGHTS

Sony announced the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS in March 2015 at $1,100. It focuses down to 0.28 m for true 1:1 (1.0x) magnification, with 15 elements in 11 groups and a 9-blade circular aperture. Optical SteadyShot is built in, a Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) motor handles autofocus, and Sony's store page lists a focus limiter with Full, 0.5 m–∞ and 0.28–0.5 m positions. The construction is dust- and moisture-resistant.

It's still a current lens. It weighs 602 g, measures 79 × 130.5 mm, takes 62 mm filters and comes with the ALC-SH138 hood. The 27° angle of view also makes it a usable short telephoto for portraits and details, and on an APS-C body such as the a6700 it frames like a 135mm lens.

Our gallery comes from six photographers: a snowy terraced slope in Mundelsheim, a still life of antique rotary graters (the photographer's own focus stack), a Euchromia moth, the Guandu Bridge observation tower at dusk, a close-up of alpine yarrow and a grasshopper on sand. The bodies range from an a7 II to an a7R V, plus two APS-C cameras, so you can see it as a landscape and architecture lens as well as a macro.

  • Optical SteadyShot
  • DDSSM AF with a three-position focus limiter
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant
