Canon EOS R8: Canon's small full-frame body, explained

Canon's lightest full-frame EOS R body at launch (461 g with battery and card, per Canon Europe), followed by the EOS R8 Mark II, announced in September 2026. Launched at $1,499 in 2023 (body only). Who it suits: stills and video shooters stepping up to full frame who will pair it with stabilized RF lenses.

HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Canon U.S.A. introduced the EOS R8 as "an extremely compact, full-frame camera aimed at advanced amateur photo and video enthusiasts", a body for "the up-and-coming video or photo enthusiast". For users who "haven't yet broken into mirrorless, the EOS R8 should be the camera that takes them over the threshold".

Canon announced the EOS R8 on February 7, 2023 at $1,499.00 body-only and $1,699.00 with the RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, for spring 2023. It pairs a 24.2MP full-frame sensor and DIGIC X with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II that detects people, animals (dogs, cats, birds and horses) and vehicles (cars, motorbikes, aircraft and trains), uncropped 4K up to 59.94p oversampled from 6K, Canon Log 3, Full HD up to 180p, and up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter, in a body of about 461 g with battery and card.

Our gallery comes from five photographers: the Spanish Peaks in Colorado, two orange daylilies, a grey heron in Sweden, the Weber house at dawn, an ashy prinia at ISO 4000 and Homestake Reservoir in Colorado. Who should buy it? Stills and video shooters who want full frame in a small body and will use stabilized RF lenses. Its limits: no in-body stabilization, no mechanical first curtain (6 fps top speed with the electronic first curtain) and about 220 viewfinder shots per charge (CIPA). Canon has now announced the R8 Mark II, which adds in-body stabilization.

The story

Canon U.S.A. announced the EOS R8 on February 7, 2023 alongside the EOS R50, describing it as "an extremely compact, full-frame camera" that "shoots up to 6-fps with 1st-curtain Electronic shutter, and up to 40-fps with full electronic" (Canon U.S.A.).

Canon launched the EOS R8 at $1,499.00 in 2023, body only, with the RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM kit at $1,699.00, and scheduled both for spring 2023.

Canon Europe still lists the EOS R8 with its full specifications, and notes the camera is "not equipped with a mechanical first curtain" (Canon Europe). Canon announced the EOS R8 Mark II on September 16, 2026 (our coverage).
