Canon EOS R8 vs R8 Mark II
Canon's small full-frame RF body and its 2026 successor share a 24.2MP sensor, DIGIC X, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, an electronic-first-curtain shutter with no mechanical first curtain, uncropped 4K/60p from 6K with Canon Log 3, one UHS-II slot and the LP-E17 battery. The EOS R8 Mark II's headline change is sensor-shift stabilization, rated up to 7.5 stops at the centre with a compatible lens. It also adds 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and clips up to 6 hours below 100 fps, and weighs about 546 g with battery and card against the R8's 461 g.

Who should buy which
Buy the EOS R8 if…
- You mostly use stabilized RF lenses, so in-body IS matters less.
- You want the lighter body: about 461 g with battery and card against 546 g.
- You want a few more LCD shots per charge (370 vs 340 in Canon Europe's power-saving figures).
Buy the EOS R8 Mark II if…
- You shoot unstabilized primes or handheld video: sensor-shift IS rated up to 7.5 stops with a compatible lens.
- You record long takes: clips up to 6 hours below 100 fps.
- You transfer files often: 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3.
The Mark II keeps the R8's sensor, autofocus family, shutter design, video modes, single card slot and LP-E17 battery, so the choice is in-body stabilization, faster wireless and longer clips against less weight. Battery figures are Canon Europe's CIPA numbers in power-saving mode on both sides; Canon Europe lists the two sensors at slightly different sizes, copied as published.
