Canon EOS R8 Mark II rumor update (Rumor): weather sealing, price to $1,899

(Rumor / unconfirmed.) Canon has not announced this camera. Canon Rumors today adds “fully” weather sealing and moves the circulating US body figure from $1,799 to $1,899. Kit, grip, and EL-5 II dollars are still unofficial.

Canon has since announced the EOS R8 Mark II: “the lightest EOS with in-body stabilization, on a 24.2MP full-frame sensor with 40 fps electronic bursts.” Read our coverage of the official Canon EOS R8 Mark II, or see Canon EOS R8 vs R8 Mark II compared.

HIGHLIGHTS

Three days out from the rumored September 15 New York reveal, the R8 Mark II story tightened again — and it is still a rumor. Canon Rumors now says the body will be weather-sealed, with Canon’s own leaked language calling it “fully,” and that the US body target moved from about $1,799 to $1,899. The euro figure they are circulating is unchanged at €1,879. A kit with the RF 24-50 is floated at $2,099, a small extension grip at $99, and the Speedlite EL-5 II at $379, with late-October shipping if the calendar holds.

What matters for photographers is the shape of the camera this is becoming. Compact full-frame, the IBIS the original R8 never got, an electronic-only shutter, a rear joystick, and a side card door instead of fishing an SD out of the battery well — still on the small LP-E17. Weather sealing was the missing checkbox for travel and light outdoor work. The current R8 already has Canon’s dust-and-drip language; “fully” is the word CR says is in the new material, and even they caveat it is probably not R1 or R5 Mark II class. The hundred-dollar bump is the trade that will decide buy-or-wait against used R6 II money, which is already the argument on Fred Miranda.

Treat every line as rumor until Canon posts a press release. The design chatter stays polarizing — “too Sony,” “not really retro,” a mode dial that now includes Slow & Fast — and the feature set is what the forums keep arguing about. Photos from the certification-style leak still do not prove gaskets, IBIS stops, or a street price.

What the leak photos still show

Canon has not announced an EOS R8 Mark II. Photos do not prove weather sealing, IBIS, 3D-from-2D video, flash sync, pricing, or an announce date — only what is visible on the body and LCD in this set.

What is visible (unofficial leak / not Canon marketing): angular EVF hump; top branding EOS R8 Mark II; rear joystick near the EVF; vari-angle LCD; AF-ON; Q/SET; mode dial including S&F; stills/video switch; side SD door; base BATT. OPEN. One live-view frame shows 1/16000, ISO 102400, and an electronic-shutter icon.

Keep the visual split clean: Canon Rumors’ Sep 8 mockup was disclosed as “99% accurate” and likely AI tools. The next-day Reddit dump is the certification-style set used here. Do not swap those labels.

Rumored specifications

Every row is rumor unless noted as “visible in leak.” New Sep 12 dollars and the “fully” sealing claim rest on Canon Rumors today. PhotoRumors’ Sep 9 leak page still shows the older sheet. Never treat these figures as MSRP. Chinese aggregator 科技饭 is the same sheet family — still unconfirmed.

Verdict

Pros

  • If IBIS, a rear joystick, a side card door, and a stronger sealing claim land on an R8-class body, that is the travel-body wishlist this rumor is answering
  • Sep 12 adds buyer-facing dollars (kit / grip / flash) three days before the rumored Sep 15 NYC window

Cons

  • Canon is silent; “fully,” $1,899, late October, and Sep 15 NYC are still rumor — “fully” is not an IP rating
  • No mechanical shutter, LP-E17, single SD, and a $100 US bump versus used R6 II money are already forum friction

What changed from prior coverage

Three days out from the rumored September 15 New York reveal, Canon Rumors now circulates a weather-sealed R8 Mark II — Canon’s leaked language is “fully” — and a US body figure of $1,899 (was $1,799), with €1,879 unchanged. A kit with the RF 24-50 is floated at $2,099, an extension grip at $99, and the Speedlite EL-5 II at $379, with late-October / second-half-of-October shipping if the calendar holds. Register People Priority, Slow & Fast mode, 1/200s flash sync, and the leaked marketing phrase “Modern EOS Aesthetic with a Classic Camera Design Philosophy” join the same unofficial sheet. Canon has not announced. There is no SKU and no sample gallery.

Our September 11 leak-update covered the certification-style photo set (joystick and side card door visible; top plate labeled EOS R8 Mark II) with a $1,799 body figure and no weather-sealing claim. That page is left unchanged as the historical record.

This follow-up is still Rumor. The delta versus that Sep 11 page: weather sealing added (CR-quoted “fully,” not an IP rating, not R1 / R5 II class; the current R8 already has dust-and-drip language); US body $1,799→$1,899; kit / grip / EL-5 II pricing; ship window tightened to late October. IBIS, joystick, and the side door are unchanged from the leak. Photos still do not prove gaskets, IBIS, or a street price. Still rumor, still samples N/A.
