HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Nikon headlined its June 21, 2023 announcement of the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm with one line: "Supports the capture of varied subjects with a wide range of focal lengths". The release names birds, wildlife and airplanes as the targets, and adds flowers and insects at your feet thanks to a 1.3 m minimum focus distance at 180mm.

Like Sony's 200-600mm, the zoom is internal, so the lens does not extend and its balance stays put. Nikon lists 25 elements in 17 groups with six ED elements, one aspherical element and a fluorine-coated front, a 9-blade aperture, an STM focus motor and Vibration Reduction rated at 5.5 stops. With Nikon's TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x it reaches 840mm and 1,200mm.

It is a big lens: 2,140 g with the tripod collar (1,955 g without) and 315.5 mm long, with a 95mm filter thread. Who should buy it? Nikon Z shooters who want 600mm with close focus for small subjects. Our gallery has a red squirrel, a gull landing, a hooded crow, a red panda, a young blue-footed booby and a gray squirrel, all shot on Z bodies.
