HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Sony built the FE 200-600mm to put 600mm reach in a lens you can still carry and hand-hold. Neal Manowitz of Sony Electronics said: "For wildlife or bird photographers, sports photography enthusiasts and many others, it offers a new level of creative freedom, striking the ultimate balance between performance and portability."

The zoom is internal, so the barrel stays the same length from 200mm to 600mm, which keeps the balance steady on a tripod or gimbal. Sony uses 24 elements in 17 groups, including five ED elements and one aspherical, an 11-blade aperture, a DDSSM focus motor and optical stabilization with three modes. Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters take it to 840mm and 1200mm.

The trade-off is size: Sony lists 2,115 g and 318 mm, with a 95mm filter thread. Who should buy it? Wildlife and bird photographers on Sony bodies who want 600mm without a fixed super-telephoto price. Our gallery comes from six photographers: a chamois in the Alps, a great egret in flight, a green woodpecker, a red squirrel, a lion and a rosy-finch in snow.
