HIGHLIGHTS

Why it exists. Sony Electronics' February 7, 2017 release (reproduced by Sony of Canada) calls the SEL85F18 an "extremely versatile, lightweight and compact telephoto prime lens solution for a variety of Sony camera owners ranging from working professionals to emerging enthusiasts". It lists a 9-bladed circular aperture, a double linear motor, a focus hold button, an AF/MF switch and a dust- and moisture-resistant design.

Sony launched the FE 85mm F1.8 in early 2017 at $600 as a compact 85mm for full-frame E-mount. It weighs 371 g and is 82 mm long, takes 67 mm filters and focuses with a quiet double linear motor. Sony gives it 9 circular aperture blades for round highlights, an ED element to control colour fringing, a customizable focus hold button and a dust- and moisture-resistant build. The trade-offs are a 0.8 m minimum focus distance (0.13x) and no optical stabilization, so it relies on the body's IBIS. On APS-C bodies it frames like a 127.5 mm short telephoto.

Our gallery comes from three photographers, all shot on a Sony a7R II with this lens: a flock of sheep, a Miranda donkey, a goat with a bell and a door detail; a swan family; and an a7R IV with the FE 135mm F1.8 GM. Who should buy it? Portrait, event and street shooters on full-frame Sony bodies. A 2026 FredMiranda owner thread asks whether to keep it next to pricier 85s.
