HIGHLIGHTS

Fujifilm announced the X-T5 on November 2, 2022, and refocused the X-T line on stills. It moved to a 40.2-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor with the X-Processor 5 engine, uses a three-direction tilting screen, and weighs about 557 g with battery and card, against 607 g for the X-T4. The ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation dials stay on top. Behind them are 5-axis stabilization rated up to 7 stops, Pixel Shift Multi-Shot for 160MP files with Fujifilm's Pixel Shift Combiner software, and an electronic shutter that reaches 1/180,000 s.

X-Processor 5 adds subject detection for animals, birds, cars, motorcycles and bikes, airplanes and trains, and phase-detect AF works down to -7 EV with the XF50mmF1.0. Bursts run at about 15 fps with the mechanical shutter and about 20 fps electronic with a 1.29x crop. Video records 6.2K internally at up to 29.97p in 4:2:2 10-bit, DCI4K/4K at up to 59.94p and Full HD at up to 240p, with F-Log2. It has two UHS-II SD slots, 19 Film Simulations including Nostalgic Neg., and Fujifilm rates the NP-W235 for about 580 frames in Normal mode.

Our gallery comes from six photographers: the castle towers at Saillon above Valais vineyards, a wind-bent tree in fog at Fanal, the town wall at Friedberg, a boundary post at Brielle, a pigeon in a Venice lane and a metro mall corridor mid-refurbishment. It suits stills-first shooters who want 40MP with Fujifilm dials. If you want faster 30 fps cropped bursts on the 26MP sensor, look at the X-T4.

The story

Fujifilm announced the X-T5 on November 2, 2022 at a suggested retail price of $1,699.95 body-only, with availability expected in late November 2022 (Fujifilm North America).

Fujifilm pitched it as a stills-first camera: with the higher-resolution fifth-generation sensor, three top-plate dials and a three-way tilting screen in a compact 557 g body (Fujifilm).

Verdict

The X-T5 is the one to buy for landscape, travel and street shooters who want 40MP files, 7-stop IBIS, subject-detection AF and Fujifilm dials in a 557 g body.

Choose the X-T4 instead if 26MP is enough and you want faster 30 fps cropped bursts and a vari-angle screen. For a stacked 26MP sensor with 40 fps, see our Fujifilm X-H2S review.

Pros

  • 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor
  • 5-axis IBIS, up to 7 stops
  • Subject-detection AF; 15 fps mechanical
  • Dual UHS-II SD; 6.2K/30p 10-bit video

Cons

  • Three-way tilting screen, not a side-hinged vari-angle
  • 20 fps electronic bursts need a 1.29x crop
  • 40MP files need storage and processing power
