Pocketable and discreet
1. Ricoh GR IV
Ricoh: Launched at $1,499.95 in 2025 (US) (Ricoh Imaging Americas)
Purpose: an APS-C camera that fits a jacket pocket, with a fixed 28mm-equivalent lens built for snap shooting.
Why this combo: the GR IV features in the street-camera roundups we checked. Its Full Press Snap mode fires at a preset distance without waiting for autofocus, and it now has 5-axis stabilization, both points pre-order buyers discussed in the Fred Miranda thread Pre-order: Ricoh GR IV digital camera.
Buy it if you want the smallest serious camera and like 28mm. Skip it if you need a viewfinder or a longer view.
Viewfinder all-rounder
2. Fujifilm X100VI
Fujifilm: Launched at $1,599.95 in 2024 (US) (Fujifilm US newsroom)
Purpose: a fixed 35mm-equivalent compact with a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder and in-body stabilization.
Why this combo: first on Digital Camera World's list, Best camera for street photography. In the Fred Miranda thread Fujifilm X100VI vs Ricoh GR III (page 5), the original poster chose the X100VI for its autofocus; they had only tried a friend's GR III and said the next GR might be the one to consider.
Buy it if you shoot with your eye to the finder. Skip it if you want interchangeable lenses.
Interchangeable-lens APS-C
3. Fujifilm X-E5 + XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR
Fujifilm: Launched at $1,699.95 body only, or $1,899.95 with the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR kit, in 2025 (US) (Fujifilm US newsroom)
Purpose: the X100VI's sensor and rangefinder styling in a body that takes any X-mount lens; the 23mm f/2.8 pancake keeps it jacket-sized. Fujifilm sold the body with the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR as a $1,899.95 kit at launch.
Why this combo: themframes puts the X-E5 first in Best Street Photography Camera You Can Actually Buy. The pancake is Fujifilm's own kit lens for it and keeps the 35mm-equivalent view of the X100VI.
Buy it if you want the X100VI look with the option to change lenses. Skip it if you want the fastest aperture; the XF 23mm f/2 or XF 35mm f/2 are the alternatives.
Fujifilm X-E5: the 40MP rangefinder-style Fuji with IBIS and interchangeable lenses
Premium full-frame
4. Leica Q3
Leica: Launched at $5,995 in 2023 (US) (PR Newswire)
Purpose: a full-frame compact with a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 and crop modes for tighter framing.
Why this combo: third on both Digital Camera World's list and dclee.net's Best Cameras for Street Photography in 2026: 7 Top Picks. It is the low-light, full-frame option without stepping up to an M-system rangefinder.
Buy it if budget is secondary to image quality and a bright lens. Skip it if you want something pocketable or affordable.
Full-frame retro ILC
5. Nikon Zf + NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2
Nikon: Launched at $1,999.95 in 2023 (US, body only) (PR Newswire)
Nikon: Launched at $299.95 in 2021 (US) for the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (PR Newswire)
Purpose: a full-frame interchangeable-lens body with dial controls, paired with a small, light 40mm prime.
Why this combo: themframes calls the 40mm f/2 the "sweet spot" for the Zf, and Zf owners in the Fred Miranda Nikon ZF Images Thread report taking the pair out on the street. A retro-styled SE version of the lens is also sold.
Buy it if you want full frame and lens choice for well under Q3 money. Skip it if size matters most; this is the largest pick here.

Bottom line
Start with the GR IV if pocketability wins, the X100VI if you want a viewfinder, or the X-E5 kit if you want lens choice. The Q3 and the Zf with 40mm are the full-frame routes at very different prices.
