Canon: Launched at $679.99 in 2023 (US, body only) for the Canon EOS R50 (Canon USA newsroom)

Canon: Launched at $199.99 in 2020 (US) for the RF 50mm F1.8 STM (Canon USA newsroom)

Combined launch cost: $879.98.

Why this combo: The R50 is a small, beginner-friendly APS-C body, and the RF 50mm F1.8 STM gives an 80mm-equivalent short telephoto view on it, which is classic head-and-shoulders framing for very little money. Owners on Fred Miranda call it the nifty fifty with a good reputation, in the thread R50 for a novice.

Buy it if you want your first interchangeable-lens portrait kit at the lowest cost. Skip it if you want weather sealing, in-body stabilisation or a grip built for long sessions.

Sony: Launched at about $2,500 in 2021 (US) for the Sony a7 IV (Sony Electronics newsroom)

Sony: Launched at about $600 in 2017 (US) for the FE 85mm F1.8 (Sony Electronics newsroom)

Combined launch cost: about $3,100.

Why this combo: The a7 IV is the 33MP all-rounder that the portrait roundups keep naming, and the FE 85mm F1.8 is the small, fast-focusing, good-value 85 that the Fred Miranda FE 85mm F1.8 image thread praises.

Buy it if you want full-frame depth of field and eye AF without paying for a G Master lens. Skip it if you need the creamiest f/1.4 rendering, or the smallest possible kit.

Canon: Launched at $4,299 in 2024 (US, body only) for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II (Canon USA newsroom)

Canon: Launched at $2,699 in 2019 (US) for the RF 85mm F1.2 L USM (Canon USA newsroom)

Combined launch cost: $6,998.

Why this combo: The 45MP R5 Mark II is named in several 2026 portrait roundups, and the RF 85mm F1.2L is Canon's flagship portrait lens with its own long Fred Miranda image thread.

Buy it if you shoot paid portrait work and want resolution and the shallowest 85mm look. Skip it if weight matters; the lens alone is large and heavy, and the cost is hard to justify for a hobby.

Combined launch cost: $2,499.90.

Why this combo: A 40MP APS-C body with a weather-sealed 50mm-equivalent prime.

Buy it if you like dial-driven handling and want a high-resolution APS-C system. Skip it if you want a tight headshot lens or you are on a strict budget.

Olympus: Launched at $399.99 in 2011 (US) for the M.Zuiko 45mm F1.8 (DPReview)

Combined launch cost: $1,099.98.

Why this combo: A small Micro Four Thirds body with a light 90mm-equivalent prime.

Buy it if you want a portrait kit that fits in a small bag. Skip it if you want maximum background blur; a smaller sensor gives less at the same framing.

Bottom line

Start with the R50 and RF 50mm F1.8 STM for the lowest-cost kit, step up to the a7 IV and FE 85mm F1.8 for full-frame depth of field and eye AF, or choose the R5 Mark II and RF 85mm F1.2L for paid work. The X-T5 with XF33mm suits dial lovers, and the E-M10 Mark IV with 45mm F1.8 fits a small bag.
