Best first camera
Canon EOS R10
The one to get if this is your first real camera and you want it to keep up with kids, pets or sport.
Canon: Launched at $979.99 in 2022 (US, body only)
Check priceWhy it fits
- It finds the subject for you. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II detects people, animals (dogs, cats, birds) and vehicles, per Canon Europe.
- It is quick. About 15 fps with the mechanical shutter and about 23 fps electronic.
- It is small. About 429 g with battery and card, with a built-in flash and a 2.95-inch vari-angle touchscreen.
✅ Buy it if
- You are moving up from a phone. It is simple to learn but leaves room to grow on the RF mount.
- You shoot moving subjects. The burst rate and tracking are the strengths here.
❌ Skip it if
- You want in-body stabilization. It has none; use stabilized lenses or look at the Nikon ZR or Z8 below.
- You want weather sealing. Canon lists no water and dust resistance.
Runner-up: the Canon EOS R50, smaller and cheaper, and the best-selling mirrorless camera on Amazon.
The bottom line: the most capable first camera here for action, at an entry-level launch price.
Best for retro style, street and travel
Nikon Z f
The one to get if you want a full-frame camera that looks and handles like a film camera.
Nikon: Launched at $1,999.95 in 2023 (US, body only)
Check priceWhy it fits
- It has real dials. Dedicated shutter, ISO and exposure-compensation dials, plus a monochrome switch.
- It has modern insides. A 24.5MP full-frame sensor with EXPEED 7 and Z 9-derived subject detection.
- It is steady in the hand. Nikon rates its in-body VR at 8.0 stops.
✅ Buy it if
- You enjoy setting exposure by hand. The dials make that quick.
- You use manual or vintage lenses. The stabilization and finder help with manual focus.
❌ Skip it if
- You shoot fast sport. The Nikon Z8 below is built for that.
- You want a light travel body. At about 710 g with battery and card it is not small.
Runner-up: the Fujifilm X-T50, a smaller APS-C body with film-simulation dials.
The bottom line: the most enjoyable camera to use here, with full-frame image quality.
Best for video and hybrid creators
Nikon ZR
The one to get if video comes first and you want cinema-camera files in a small body.
Nikon: Launched at $2,199.95 in 2025 (US, body only)
Check priceWhy it fits
- It records RAW inside the camera. R3D NE, N-RAW and ProRes RAW HQ up to 6K/59.94p, per Nikon's manual.
- It handles sound. 32-bit float audio through the built-in mic and the 3.5 mm jack.
- It is easy to monitor. A 4-inch, 1000-nit vari-angle touchscreen. TechRadar calls it "maximum video bang for buck".
✅ Buy it if
- You film solo or with a small crew. It weighs about 630 g with battery and card.
- You want RED color. It was co-developed with RED and uses REDWideGamutRGB.
❌ Skip it if
- You mostly shoot stills. It has an electronic shutter only, and Nikon lists no viewfinder.
- You want one body for both. The Nikon Z6III is the better hybrid.
Runner-up: the Nikon Z6III, which adds a viewfinder and keeps internal 6K RAW.
The bottom line: the most video for the money on this page.
Best for sports and wildlife
Nikon Z8
The one to get if you shoot fast subjects and want the Z 9 without its built-in grip.
Nikon: Launched at $3,999.95 in 2023 (US, body only)

- It films too. 8K to 30p and 4K to 120p, with internal N-RAW and ProRes RAW HQ.

- You shoot product, studio or landscape work. Pixel Shift Multi Shot adds even more detail for still subjects.
❌ Skip it if
- You shoot action. About 8 fps mechanical; the Nikon Z8 is faster.
- You need to save money. It has the highest launch price here.
Runner-up: the Sony a7R V, 61MP full frame for about half the launch price.
The bottom line: the detail pick, if your budget allows.

- Canon EOS R5 Mark II. Our #1 overall, but it doesn't beat a specialist in any one role here.
- Sony a7 V. The best all-rounder on our top 5 list, for the same reason.
- Nikon Z6III. A video runner-up with a viewfinder; the ZR does more for video.
How we chose
We started from the cameras that established reviewers recommend for each kind of photographer, including TechRadar, Tom's Guide and Photography Life, then checked every spec and launch price against the manufacturer. Each pick had to be the clearest fit for one role. We haven't tested these cameras ourselves; the photos are credited under each one.
Prices are launch prices from each manufacturer, in US dollars for the body only. They aren't today's prices, so check before you buy.
